Nano 2012: Day 11

Unfortunately, I got caught up with work today and did very little writing. I guess it's okay because I was productive elsewhere, but I was freaking out a little bit every time I looked at the clock and wondered how many words I could have had if I'd been able to write today.

I did get a little bit of writing done in the early morning before the rest of my life kicked in, but it wasn't anything significant. As it stands, I'm 10k away from where I wanted to be tonight. And I'm just mentally drained, too. Today involved a lot of problem solving.

It's not even a quarter to eleven yet, so I'm going to give this a shot: I've got a list of scenes, plot points, etc. that I'd planned on writing today. If I can summon the willpower, I'll stay up until I've gotten those written, whatever my wordcount may be.

What do you guys do after a long day when you've failed to produce words? Is there some little trick or writing exercise that you like to turn to? Do you eat some chocolate, climb into bed, and write first thing in the morning? Or do you set goals that you can't go to sleep until you've reached.

Seriously. I need to know what other people are doing when they're in my shoes. Maybe some of your ideas will work for me.

Well, here goes nothing.

  1. I try two things. 1) just writing a little bit I set myself a ridiculously low word count. Say 200 words. Sometimes that will be enough to kickstart my writing mojo. If not I go to step 2.
    2) GI to bed and rest if 200 words doesn't restore the writing I'm obviously too tired and need sleep. Writing is normally much easier the next day and I catch up.

    1. Thanks for the advice, Rosie. I think that's probably what I'll try next time. Unfortunately, I didn't have much willpower the other night. I started in trying to work on my list. I did almost nothing and then just wen to bed.

Luckily this round of struggling seems to have passed and I'm going to make the most of my upswing before the next rough patch.
